Ah, the age-old question: Is watermelon safe for cats to eat? As a doting cat parent, you want to give your little BFF the most nutritious food possible. But, sometimes (okay, more than sometimes), they deserve a little treat. Let's say you see them eyeing your fresh, summery watermelon slices. Before you bust out the world’s smallest Edible Arrangement, let's explore whether or not cats can even eat watermelon and learn about other cat-safe fruits and veggies.

Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they can (and should!) eat a diet rich in animal protein. Most of their menu should consist of high-protein wet and dry cat food, say, our [Grain-Free Turkey and Turkey Liver Pâté](/content/products/turkey-and-turkey-liver-recipe-pate/index.html) followed by [pure protein freeze-dried treats](/content/products/freeze-dried-treat-bundle/index.html). However, they can eat a small amount of fruits and veggies (yes, including watermelon!)

Watermelon is not toxic to cats. You can offer bite-size pieces as a treat in moderation. The fruit itself is safe for consumption, but avoid the rind and seeds, since they’re tough to digest and can lead to gastrointestinal issues.  Apples, bananas, blueberries, and strawberries are also safe for your cat's diet. Cooked sweet potatoes, green beans, and carrots are cool for cats, too.

So cats can technically eat watermelon, but it should never be a significant part of their diet. As cute as a tiny Edible Arrangement may seem, only give them tiny, rind- and seed-free pieces as a treat.

Always consult your veterinarian before making significant changes to your cat's diet.
